YOUR Humane Society SPCA Welcomes New Executive Director

(Lake Panasoffkee, FL 09/09/2020)

YOUR Humane Society SPCA is pleased to announce that it has hired Jona Bumstead as its new Executive Director. Ms. Bumstead brings with her a strong background of animal shelter management, successful grant writing and fundraising, educational training in current animal sheltering practices and a personal volunteer perspective. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan and certifications in Maddie’s Fund Animal Shelter Management and “Fear Free” Shelter Operations.

As Executive Director Ms. Bumstead is responsible not only for the daily operations of the no-kill animal shelter but also for developing its steady growth to support the shelter’s mission and programs to best serve Sumter County’s animals and residents. Working alongside the Board of Directors, her responsibilities will be in the planning of the animal shelter’s future. “We look forward to Jona’s contributions and skills to enhance and strengthen our organization as we move forward. Her work in shelters from Michigan to Florida have yielded positive results that led her to become YOUR Humane Society SPCA’s Executive Director” said Claudia Labbe’, Chairman of the Board. “Additionally, we recognize and thank our Acting Director, Celine Petrie, for stepping in to oversee the shelter’s operations for the past several months, all while navigating the added challenges the pandemic brought us during our extensive search that led us to Jona.”

As the shelter welcomes Ms. Bumstead into her new role, she began her first week by holding meetings with her staff and volunteer leaders on-site. To allow her time to get to know her team and to respect COVID-19 precautions, we welcome our volunteers and community to reach out to her initially at director@hsspca.org or by making an appointment as we continue to need to limit the number of people in the office at any one time.

Petco Foundation Invests in Lifesaving Work of YOUR Humane Society SPCA

Grant of $7,500 will extend efforts to save more animal lives in Sumter County and throughout Central Florida

Lake Panasoffkee, FL (June 8, 2020) – YOUR Humane Society SPCA in Sumter County, Florida announced it was awarded a $7,500 grant from the Petco Foundation to support its vital work saving lives of the animals in need via their shelter’s adoption program.

The Petco Foundation investment will increase awareness of the shelter’s adoptable pets by funding marketing and promotion which will further the mission of YOUR Humane Society SPCA and help animals find loving homes.

“Currently, during peak kitten season and recognizing that June is National ‘Adopt a Shelter Cat’ month, we are offering a ‘Take Two, They’re Small’ promotion where two kittens can be adopted for the adoption fee of one. All kittens are up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and spayed or neutered,” said Celine Petrie, Acting Shelter Director at YOUR Humane Society SPCA. “This funding will help us increase public awareness of our vital work and allow more pets to find permanent loving homes. These additional adoption resources made available by the Petco Foundation are truly appreciated at such a critical time.”

With our more than 4,000 animal welfare partners, we inspire and empower communities to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs, spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, service and therapy animals, and numerous other lifesaving initiatives. Through our Think Adoption First program, we partner with Petco stores and animal welfare organizations across the country to increase pet adoptions. So far, we’ve helped more than 6.5 million pets find their new loving families, and we’re just getting started. Visit petcofoundation.org to learn more about how you can get involved.

October 2020 Volunteer of the Month: Karen Weber

Every month YOUR Humane Society SPCA highlights volunteers who have made an impact on the lives of the animals we care for, and our organization as a whole. Our Volunteer of the Month for October 2020 is Karen Weber!

Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Karen spent a good part of her childhood on the move. Her father was in retail, and while many people reminisce on a childhood as “army brats,” Karen considered herself a “retail brat,” moving across the country with her family to follow her father’s dream…(Read More)

🐾The Importance of Microchipping Your Pet🐾

It is estimated that 1/3 of pets will go missing at some point in their lives, and 90% of them will NOT find their way home without some form of ID. Microchipping has the best reunion record. It provides your pet with a more assured form of ID that won’t be easily removed as a tag on a collar could be.

With hurricane season here, YOUR Humane Society SPCA cannot stress enough the importance for pets to have microchips. Even other circumstances, such as fire, an auto accident, theft, bolting out of fear, or your pet simply wandering off can separate them from you, and a microchip is the most effective way to identify and be the best chance to successfully reunite with you.

A microchip, transponder, the size of a grain of rice, inserted under the skin near the shoulder blades, can easily be read by a local vet or animal shelter. It transmits a unique ID number associated with your pet. Once you register the chip with the database company, all you need to do is keep your contact information updated such as if your phone number changes or if you move.

No matter the circumstance of how your pet is separated from you, the best thing to do for a successful reunion – and possibly saving your pet’s life – is to provide identification by microchip. Contact YOUR vet now to get your pet one or if your microchipped pet’s info is up to date.

🐾Fostering Pets Can and Should Be the New Normal🐾
YOUR Humane Society SPCA looks at Gloria Litman as a marvel. When people pledge to save animal lives, their acts of love come together to make a big difference, and that describes our volunteer Gloria. She is a local foster hero who demonstrates the lifesaving impact of fostering pets. She inspires people to join the pet fostering movement to foster in homes instead of in animal shelters, with the goal to make fostering the new normal for many.

Gloria spent over 20 years volunteering for her New Hampshire shelter. When she began volunteering for YOUR Humane Society SPCA after her move to Central Florida in 2014, she soon took on the role of heading up the adoption program for our cats temporarily residing and showcased at our local pet supply retailers including Petco in The Villages. She personally meets and interviews potential volunteer foster homes and adopters to be sure they will provide a wonderful home, whether temporary or permanent, for each cat and kitten.

In addition, Gloria fosters felines in her own home, knowing that it helps prepare them for adoption and successfully adjust into a family environment. Most cats seem to thrive better in home settings as a shelter environment may be too stressing for many. “Cats enjoy cozier naps, warmer welcomes by friends and family, and find more comfort in the love and compassion provided in a foster home setting,” Gloria states. “It makes the fostered cat happier and allows a pet’s true personality to emerge, while being a fun and educational experience for you and your family,” she added. The best part is that fostering a pet frees up another spot at the shelter or rescue to help save another animal.

During the response to COVID-19, nationwide, more animals have been fostered, and it is Gloria’s hope that more people will jump on the fostering bandwagon. If you are considering fostering a cat or dog, please contact YOUR Humane Society SPCA at 352-793-9117 or volunteering@hsspca.org. Become a foster parent and discover a rewarding experience that will change your life and that of a homeless animal forever. Petco Foundation #savepetlives #PFpartner❤️❤️❤️

YOUR HUMANE SOCIETY SPCA USING NEW FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY FOR LOST PETS

Partnering with Finding Rover using revolutionary technology to identify lost pets in Sumter County, Florida

YOUR Humane Society SPCA is very excited to announce their brand new partnership with Finding Rover! Celine Petrie, Acting Director of Sumter’s no-kill shelter commented “This is one more way we strive to keep your pets safe. In addition to the current resources we provide our community such as our free emergency wallet cards, our disaster prep handouts and our pet alert window clings, we wanted to add another important component to a pet owner’s toolkit with Finding Rover, an amazing application of facial recognition technology for pets.”

Finding Rover is a FREE service that uses patented Facial Recognition technology to help reunite lost dogs and cats with their families! As a partner, the community can now see if their lost pet is in the shelter’s care with just a few clicks. Additionally, people looking to adopt can see the dogs and cats that are available at YOUR Humane Society SPCA.

Every dog and cat that leaves YOUR Humane Society SPCA, through a reunion or an adoption, can remain protected on Finding Rover when the pet parent registers on Finding Rover with the same email address that the shelter has on file. If that dog or cat ever gets lost, their record will already be in the system, and identifying that pet will be a snap.

We highly encourage everyone to register with a personal Finding Rover account by going to www.FindingRover.com/register. It just takes a minute to help bring your pet home faster in the event they are unexpectedly separated from you! Don’t wait until you lost your pet.

  1. Enter your name, email address, and zip code
  2. Upload a face-forward photo of your pet
  3. Enter a few main details about your pet

It’s that simple and completely FREE!

For The Love Of Animals Expo

POSTPONED TIL 2021

YOUR Humane Society SPCA, host of the well-received 2019 For the Love of Animals Expo, has postponed the second annual Expo in 2020 to 2021. Due to the uncertainties we are all facing due to COVID-19, we are postponing our “For the Love of Animals” Expo until 2021 where we hope we can all gather safely. We wish the best of health to you and your families! Mark your calendars as it will return to the Wildwood Community Center at 6500 CR 139, from 9AM-3PM and will feature not only an array of regional animal rescues and shelters but also host many educational opportunities for animal lovers and pet owners. Civic groups, vendors, nonprofits of all service types, clubs for children and adults will also be part of the day’s festivities. Food, live entertainment, auctions and chance drawings will also be available to attendees. A “Be Kind to Animals” contest for children will soon be promoted and the winners will be announced at the Expo, October 24th. Sponsorship and vendor spaces are still available. For more information contact Claudia Labbé, Fundraising/PR Chairperson, at 352-793-9117 or fundraising@hsspca.org

“The Expo, originally scheduled for January 18, encountered unexpected circumstances which caused the rescheduling and location changes. We hope the change has not inconvenienced anyone but our goal was to present the best animal themed expo possible in our region. We look forward to another great turnout of participating non-profits, sponsors and attendees as our inaugural Expo had,” commented Claudia Labbé. The For the Love of Animals Expo not only serves as a fundraiser for YOUR Humane Society SPCA but also helps the many other participating non-profits and animal organizations place adoptable animals. The general public can gain information on the many other worthy businesses and agencies who help their communities.

Kuranda Shelter Beds

Our shelter’s dogs have been fortunate to enjoy comfortable rest atop the many donated Kuranda beds we received years ago. They lasted quite a while but now it is time to replace some and have some spare covers handy. The blue ones go in our adoption floor kennels and the burgundy ones are for our quarantine kennels. Thanks to the generosity of Kuranda, for every bed that is donated, they are also donating a snuggly fleece cover!🐾🐾
